My name is Jackie Mahon. I am a fly-fishing guide and a fly tyer located on the west coast of Ireland where I guide full time on Lough Arrow, Lough Melvin and Glencar Lough.
Fly fishing has been a strong passion of mine since a very young age. I am from a family of fishermen and as they say it's in my blood. A big part of my childhood was spent chasing wild Brown Trout and Salmon on the Garavogue river in Sligo. I caught my first Brown Trout on one of my own flies and I was literally hooked. The feeling I had that day catching that Brown trout with a fly rod in my hand and on my own fly is something I will never forget for the rest of my life. From that day on all I wanted to do was fish and tye flies.
I was blessed to be able to learn from my dad and grandfather the art of fly fishing, fly tying and dyeing materials which you can see in the flies that I tye. On my flyfishing journey I represented my country on an international level and also guided and tyed the winning flies for the Irish team which helped them achieve a gold medal on Lough Melvin in June 2022. I am Fly Designer for Fulling Mill, and I was previously a Pro tyer for Ahrex hooks. My flies have been featured in two Trout and Salmon magazine articles; Sedge patterns for Trout and Salmon Magazine's August 2019 issue and Mayflies for Trout and Salmon Magazine's May 2019 issue.
What I have found as I have aged is my flyfishing journey has changed, and 7 years ago I made the decision to guide on Lough Arrow and Lough Melvin. I have guided people from all over the world and made great friends along the way. The best part of my job is the excitement and the smile of a client hooking and landing that Trout brings the kid back out in me all those years ago on the Garavogue River.
We love what we do because we do what we love.
